Kincardine Floating Marine Wind Farm (Scotland)
Delvalle was chosen for the Kicanrdine Offshore floating Wind Farm in Scotland as the supplier of more than 70 electrical enclosures in IP66 and IP67; these cabinets were made of A316 stainless steel in order to protect the electrical components from the corrosive environment, humidity and adverse water conditions such as rain, snow, wind … In this way, we can ensure the tightness against dust and water and as well as the corrosion resistance for the lifetime of the platform.
The wind farm is located 15 km off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland and it has been developed by the company Cobra (ACS group), this wind farm is comprised of a 2MW Vestas turbine in addition to five 9.5 MW Vestas turbines.
This wind farm will be one of the biggest one in the world and it is expected to achieve full performance in 2020
The 50MW Kincardine offshore wind farm under construction in Scotland, UK, will be the world’s biggest floating offshore wind farm, upon commissioning in 2020. Scotland is also home to the current biggest 30MW Hywind floating wind farm.
The Kincardine floating offshore wind farm is being developed by Kincardine Offshore Wind (KOWL), And choose for this big proyect delvalle supply more than 70 units of IP66 and IP67 Offshore stainless steel enclosures.
First power from the project was achieved by connecting 2MW to the British electricity grid in October 2018.
Scheduled to achieve full capacity in 2020, the 50MW offshore wind farm is expected to generate up to 218GWh of clean electricity a year, which will be enough to power approximately 55,000 Scottish households.
PROJECT GALLERYThe Kincardine floating offshore wind farm is estimated to cost £350m ($445m) and will have an operational life of 25 years. KOWL received the final approval to construct and operate the floating offshore wind farm from the Scottish government, in March 2017.
Kincardine wind farm location and site details
The Kincardine floating wind farm is being developed in the Aberdeen Bay, approximately 15km off the south-east coast of Kincardineshire, at water depths ranging between 60m to 80m.
Spread over 110km², the project site lies within the western half of the OWNE1 offshore wind development area of Scotland.
Kincardine wind farm turbine details
Kincardine floating wind farm will feature a total of six offshore turbines including five V164-9.525 MW turbines and one V80-2.0 MW from MHI Vestas.
The V80-2.0 MW wind turbine, which is already in operation at the site, has a rated capacity of 2MW, while the remaining five under-construction V164-9.5MW turbines will have a rated capacity of 9.5MW each.
Kincardine will be the world’s first floating wind power project to use wind turbines of more than 9MW capacity.
With a 164m-diameter rotor, each V164-9.5MW turbine will have a swept area of 21,124m². The nacelle dimensions of the turbine are 9.3m x 20.7m x 8.8m, while the blade tip height of each 9.5MW turbine will be 190m.
Kincardine floating turbine foundationsThe wind turbines for the Kincardine project are being installed on triangular-shaped semi-submersible foundations. The foundations are moored in water depths of 60m-80m via four mooring lines each.
The 2MW turbine unit of the wind farm is mounted on WindFloat foundation provided by Principle Power.
The floating foundations for the 9.5MW turbines are being provided by the Navantia-Windar joint venture.
Power transmissionThe electricity generated by each turbine will be gathered and transmitted to a 1.5km-wide export cable corridor through 30km of 33kV inter-array cables.
The export cable corridor comprising two 33kV 15km-long transmission lines will terminate at an onshore cable landing pit near the Aberdeenshire coastline in Scotland.
The electricity from the landfall facility will further be transmitted to the onshore substation at Redmoss.
Contractors involved
Delvalle is responsible for supply 70 units offshore IP66 and IP67 enclosures made Aisi316 stainless steel.
Cobra Wind, a subsidiary of ACS Group, is responsible for the engineering, design, supply, construction, and commissioning of the Kincardine floating wind farm.
Cobra awarded the turbine supply contract for the project to MHI Vestas in 2018, while Bourbon Subsea Services was contracted for turbine installation.
Principle Power provided WindFloat semi-submersible foundation for the 2MW turbine of the wind farm, while a joint venture between Navantia and Windar was contracted to supply the remaining five floating turbine foundations for the project in February 2019.
The mooring system for the floating wind turbine foundations is provided by Vryhof, which appointed Farinia Group for supplying the clump weights.
Prysmian Group was contracted by Cobra Wind to provide the inter-array as well as export cables for the project in January 2018.
SENER was selected by Cobra in January 2019 to provide supervisory services as well as technical feasibility analysis during the construction, installation, and commissioning of the wind project.
